Disc Drop

About Disc Drop

Real price history for 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD.

Physical media collectors know the routine: a disc is "50% off" at one store, but it was never really priced at the number being crossed out. Disc Drop exists to answer a simple question before you buy: is this actually a good price?

What we do

We check the catalogs of Canadian and US physical media retailers several times a day and record every price change. Each listing keeps its own price history, so you can see what a disc has really cost over time, and whether today's "sale" is a genuine low or just the usual price with a banner on it.

How we tell a real deal from a fake one

A retailer's "compare-at" price is just a number they choose to show. We don't rely on it. Our Deals page only highlights a listing when its current price is below the highest price we have actually observed for it, and the saving is meaningful in dollars, not only in percentage - so a $2 drop on a $3 disc doesn't crowd out a $20 drop on a boxed set.

Price history only goes back to when we started tracking a listing, so a newly added disc has a short history. We'd rather show you less than guess.

Comparing across stores

The same film shows up at several retailers, in different formats and editions (a standard 4K disc, a SteelBook, a collector's edition). We match listings to the same title using movie and TV metadata from TMDB, and we keep editions and TV seasons separate, so the "Compare prices" section on a listing only shows prices for the same product, in the same market and currency, rather than a different edition that happens to share a name. Titles we can't match confidently are grouped by name only and labeled that way.

How we make money

Disc Drop is free to use. Some links to retailers are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate links are labeled, and they never change the price you pay or which listings we show. See our affiliate disclosure for details.

Where our data comes from

Prices and availability come from each retailer's own public product listings, collected politely and at a modest pace. Movie and TV details come from TMDB. Prices can change at any moment, so always confirm the final price on the retailer's site before you buy.
